JOIN THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Supporting the NJELSA’s registered apprenticeship program will satisfy the requirements to renew your Public Works Contractor Registration for the Protective Signal Installer trade.

New Jersey Electronic Life Safety Association (“NJELSA”) is proud to announce that it has received approval from the United States Department of Labor (“USDOL”) to offer an apprenticeship program for the Protective Signal Installer trade - Rapids Code 0459.

NJELSA represents electronic security professionals, system integrators, fire alarm companies, manufacturers and distributors that do business in New Jersey.

NJELSA’s new three-year apprenticeship program will provide apprentices with several career advancement opportunities. Apprentices participating in the program will receive a combination of on-the-job training and related technical instruction under the supervision of journey-level professionals. Apprentices will earn wages and perform productive work, while learning the practical and theoretical aspects of this highly skilled occupation.

A note about Public Work in New Jersey

If you do or want to do Public Work in New Jersey, you need to obtain a Public Works Certificate from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (click here for more information). In order to obtain or renew a Public Works Certificate, a company must participate in a registered Apprenticeship Program.  The NJELSA Apprenticeship Program is an approved program by the USDOL and participation makes you compliant. If you do not want employ an apprentice, you can still participate in the program by making an annual contribution to the program’s ERISA / Training Trust Fund.  The ERISA / Training Trust Fund is only used to cover the costs to run the NJELSA Apprenticeship Program.

Program Highlights 

Duration

The term of the apprenticeship is 3 years with an On-the-Job-Learning (OJL) attainment of 6,000 hours, supplemented by the minimum required 444 hours of related instruction.

Cost

Some financial assistance may be available for qualifying apprentices.

NJELSA’s apprenticeship program will also greatly benefit its employer-members by helping them recruit and develop a highly skilled workforce, while improving productivity and profitability.

 

Additionally, the new program will ensure that NJELSA members who bid on public works remain compliant with New Jersey’s public works contractor laws. Specifically, New Jersey law requires that public works contractors participate in a USDOL-approved apprenticeship program for each apprenticeable trade that they employ on any public works project, including protective signal installers, in order to obtain or renew public works contractor registration certificates.

A Public Works Certificate is required of any company doing work in a local, state or federal building in New Jersey.


And it is required when doing work in any building that is either partially or wholly funded by public funds, such as:
 

  • Fire Station, Police Station or Municipal Building
     

  • Schools, Public, Charter or in any way receiving public funding
     

  • A strip mall or other facility with a single government office
